Concert: Bach & Charpentier
Both J.S. Bach & M.A. Charpentier were from the Baroque period, though their styles vary greatly. The set up of a small instrumental ensemble comprising two baroque recorders, viola da gamba, a cello and a digital continuo organ serves to recreate, as close as possible, the sounds of the era.
Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden (BWV 230) is one of only six motets by J.S. Bach. The virtuosic and energetic music is sure to captivate both novice and connoisseurs alike. Actus Tragicus (BWV 106) is one of Bach’s earliest cantatas, composed at the age of 22. Despite the young age, his ingenuity and detailed musical writing shines bright, in addition to his effective and
economic use of musicians (a small vocal ensemble supported by an early music ensemble comprising recorders, bass viols, and continuo organ). The aria “Schafe können sicher weiden” from his Hunting Cantata BWV 208, has been an evergreen crowd favorite for its pleasing tune. M.A. Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noël (H. 9), provides great contrast to J.S. Bach’s music. Selections from this work includes lively movements that have incorporated traditional folk tunes (Noels).
Special Guest and Consulting Baroque Specialist: Ibrahim Aziz (Viola da gamba)
Vocal Soloists: Sharlene Rani (Soprano), Chew Shi Yun (Soprano), Darrel Chan (Countertenor), Scott Woo (Tenor), Mak Chi Hoe (Bass-Baritone)
Voice Ensemble: Asha Menon, Serene Chng, Chow Yee Mun, Maximus Tan, Maxwell Sim, Sean Chay, Simon Chong
Baroque Ensemble: Foo Chie Haur (Baroque Recorder, Flute), Eunice Loh (Baroque Recorder, Violin), Ibrahim Aziz (Viola da gamba), Estal Lee (cello), Darrel Chan & Iau Jo Yee (organ),

Project Limina x VerSeS – Cycle of Emotions (Youtube Premiere)

The global pandemic in 2020 took the whole world off guard, and many have suffered losses such as: lives, monies, and perhaps time. Thus, we started from the expression of ‘Grief’ as a response to loss. As a natural response to grief, we crave, and pray for the bygone times when things were better, thus ‘Saudade’, expressing an emotional state that longs for the past and things that are gone. Following up with the 3rd movement, the feeling of ‘Reverence’ to the high powers, comprising ‘Prayerful’ and spiritual healing. Bringing us to the state of ‘Solemn’ , where we will start picking ourselves up, moving forward with dignity and authenticity in this chaotic world, ‘Happily’.

Bringing us to the state of ‘Solemn’ , where we will start picking ourselves up, moving forward with dignity and authenticity in this chaotic world, ‘Happily’.
4th Movement Cycle of Emotions: Solemn & Happy here
Solemne: La Cathedral – Allegro Solemne (Barrios) Leaving the calm and spiritual atmosphere of the Cathedral of San Jose, Barrios exits the Cathedral, back into the busy street of Montevideo, continue his journey in life with dignity and sincerity.
Happy: Bourrée, BWV 1009 (Bach) After going through this cycle of emotion, we wish all to be able to heal and find happiness, here’s a Bourree, a 16th century dance form of French origin, often dance to music that is happy and gay in gatherings. A jolly good time! Baroque style.
Watch 3rd Movement Cycle of emotions: Prayerful & Reverence here
Prayerful: La Cathedral – Andante Religioso (Barrios) During Barrios’s stay in Montevideo Uruguay, he hears the tolling bells of the Cathedral of San Jose. Upon entering the cathedral, he hears the organist playing the music of Bach. The time, space and sound that created this spiritual calmness, became the inspiration of this composition, a contemplative prayer in the process of his own spiritual healing.
Reverence: — .. … . .-. . .-. . / — . .. an excerpt (Allegri) In the calmness, a contemplative recognition of one’s own past wrongs, repenting and hoping for spiritual salvation.
Watch 2nd Movement Cycle of emotions: Grief & Saudade here
Grief: Flow my tears (Dowland) Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn Where night’s black bird her sad infamy sings There let me live forlorn.
Saudade: La Cathedral – Preludio Saudade (Barrios) Battered by the challenges in life comprising among others financial struggles, ailing health and marital problem, and potentially triggered a significant event of lost, his heart was torn open by grief, and nostalgia of the bygone times when things are better, thus come this personal statement of bereavement and sorrow – a saudade of his own.
